The county Offaly village of Shinrone, located between Nenagh and Roscrea, organised its own race meeting in the middle of the 19th century. The Sporting Magazine reported on the meeting organised by the Ormond and King’s County Hunt Committees on Monday 9th April 1838 at which the Shinrone Plate went to Mr Bowler’s Fox, who defeated Mr Lalor’s mare, while the feature race, the Westenra Gold Cup, was won by Lady Jane. There is no further evidence to suggest racing took place in the village in subsequent years. |
